Uffculme is on the Devon side of the Somerset border, equidistant from the market towns of Tiverton, Cullompton and Wellington. The village lies on the upper reaches of the River Culm, near the Blackdown Hills National Landscape, and has many local walks.

    Uffculme and the surrounding area

The public footpath that runs along the edge of our land, crosses a couple of neighbouring fields and carries on into Uffculme village, where you will find a village shop and Post Office; the Ostler Inn – a real village local; historic Coldharbour Mill – one of the oldest working woollen mills in the world; and the beautiful Bridwell Park house and gardens.

In the opposite direction, towards the motorway, is The Old Well Garden Centre, an independent family business that in addition to selling plants, garden fixtures and equipment, runs a food hall, gift shop, café and tea room.

There are numerous footpaths around the village, which extend along the River Culm as far as the village of Culmstock, two miles away, where the Strand Stores acts as a village shop, licensed deli and café; and the Culm Valley Inn offers a public bar and full restaurant service, with a courtyard, patio, garden and play area in summer, and an open fire in winter.

    Tiverton

Ten minutes away, along the A361 dual carriageway, the administrative centre of Mid-Devon straddles the River Exe. Our favourite spots are the Gwalior, for its authentic top-rate North Indian cooking, colourful knickknacks and light, airy feel; the regular open and covered versions of the Pannier Market; the Jolly Vintner independent wine store; and Heard & Sendell, an old-fashioned “farm, garden, coal, pet & equine” suppliers that sells lots of useful stuff.

    Wellington

Ten minutes in the opposite direction, along the A38, this oddly lovable, scruffy mess of a town was chosen in 1814 as the location of Irishman, soldier and erstwhile British Prime Minister, Arthur Wellesley’s Dukedom, though whether he ever visited is a different matter. As well as sometimes popping up the hill to visit his Monument, we like the Villa Verde, a reliable Italian-owned restaurant, on the way into the town at Rockwell Green, for pizza, pasta and more elaborate Italian cooking; and watch with interest the redevelopment of the old Tonedale Mill, already home to Brazier Coffee Roasters, and soon to house the new taproom and brewhouse of Many Hands Brewery.

    Cullompton
One motorway junction south, Cullompton town has seen better days, but dotted along the old A38, now the B3181, are a lot of places worth considering, if only to release your inner idiot. Starting to the north, at Diggerland, south of Willand, you can operate, drive or be hoisted into the sky by a wide variety of JCBs; while further on is the Apex Race Centre, which offers afully immersive, multi-sensory, realistic simulated experience of driving racing cars around a circuit. South of the town, at Westcott, is the 9-hole Footgolf Devon course, for golf without the clubs; or Devon Laser Clays for shooting without the bangs. For those who prefer an even quieter pursuit, we recommend The Antique Village at Hele, one of the largest antique centres in the West of England.
  • Public transport

Buses: This is rural England, not central London! The 373 bus stops in the centre of the village, roughly once an hour, on its way between Tiverton and Cullompton. The 22 bus also stops there, every two hours, on its way between Tiverton and Taunton, via Wellington.

Trains: Tiverton Parkway, a short drive away, and is a mainline station with three massive car parks. It connects Uffculme to the rest of the world, both up-country and down the peninsula. The fastest of the 20+ direct trains a day to / from London Paddington take less than two hours, and to / from Bristol Temple Meads 45 minutes, in each case making them faster than driving. Birmingham New Street is typically 2 hours 15 minutes.

Planes: Exeter Airport, which flies to Amsterdam Schiphol, Dublin and Edinburgh, is 31 km (20 miles) away, which certain websites compiled by AI bots seem to think is important.

  • Running over eleven miles from the River Exe in Tiverton to the hamlet of Lowdswell, in the middle of nowhere, the never-completed Great Western Canal is a great place for flat-by-definition, tranquil footpath walks that change markedly with the seasons.  We know every parking spot along its length, or if you prefer to cycle it, we recommend Abbotshood in Sampford Peverell (see below).  In high summer you might like to float in one of the UK’s last horse-drawn barges. Winners of Devon's Best small attraction of the year award in 2023-4.

    Visit the Great Western Canal

  • The Great Western Canal provides 11 miles of safe, flat towpath cycling, with much to see along the way.  Depending on the time of year it is common to spot families of swans, geese, coots, moorhens, numerous species of duck, and even kingfishers.  At the Tiverton end is an information centre.  Hire comes with a booklet, giving lots of information on what is around.

  • Coldharbour Mill, on the north bank of the River Culm, in Uffculme village, is among of the oldest working woollen mills in the world, and almost certainly the oldest in England, having been in continuous production since 1799.
